Web-sites: www.sbharriers.co.uk MALES & FEMALES: Shaftesbury Harriers came into being in 1890 and Shaftesbury Ladies in 1947. In 1986 Barnet Ladies joined with Shaftesbury having broken away from Barnet and District AC in 1976. The first members to be awarded their county colours were Arthur Kendall and Harold Ashton in the 1930's. Under the coaching of Bob Parker, emerged Dave Bedford, who rose to world record heights and Julian Goater not far behind in ability, while Martin Reynolds and Donovan Reid were both outstanding sprinters. Star of the women over many years has been Joyce Smith and of recent years Jackie Agyepong and Mary Berkley-Agyepong. At the Seoul Olympics, member, Pascaline Bethuel ran in the women's marathon for Kenya. The men compete in Div. 1 of the British Lg. and Div. 1 of the Southern T & F Lg., while the junior men are in the British junior Lg. and the young athletes are in their Premier Lg. The ladies compete in the National Lg. Div. 1, Southern Lg Div. 1 & 4 and MacDonald's under 17 leagues male and female. The social department holds various activities. Headquarters: Copthall Stadium, Great North Way, Hendon, for track, road and cross-country. Training times are Tues. & Thur. 6.15pm, Sun. 10.30pm. Coaching is available. |
