Web-site: www.hillingdonac.co.uk MALES & FEMALES: The club's roots go back to 1877 when Finchley Harriers were formed. By the 1890's they were one of the strongest clubs in the country, the star being Charles Bennett, 1900 Olympic winner in the 1500m and 5000m both in world record times. In the same year Bennett won the National cross-country championships for the second time and Finchley won the team award. Of later years Eric Shirley picked up top honours in the steeplechase and David Hemery, the 400mH expert took gold and the world record at the 1968 Olympics with a runaway victory. In 1966 Finchley amalgamated with Ruislip & Northwood AC while in 1990 Uxbridge & District Ladies AC combined forces with them. Ruislip & Northwood strength was with their women's section among whom were internationals Pat Nutting-Pryce, hurdles, Frances Slaap and Gwenda Matthews, both high jump. Headquarters: Hayes Stadium, Judge Heath Lane, Hayes where there is a eight-lane synthetic track and an indoor sports hall. Training is Tues. & Thur. evenings and Sun. mornings. when a range of coaching is available. The club house is located at 206 Bury Street, Ruislip, from where cross-country and road running takes place and social events are held. Membership starts at 11 years. |
