Enfield AC, was founded 1920, and Ponders End AC, 1922 became Enfield AC in 1965, A breakaway group in from Southgate and Wood Green Sports Association formed Southgate Harriers in 1933 which became Haringey AC in 1974. Bernard Eeles (Southgate) competed for England in 1934 against France
in the 1500m.Their first Olympian was John Giles (1948 Shot). Other
notable Internationals were Stan Cox (Marathon), John Wrighton (400m),
Mike MacFarlane (Sprints), Gary Oakes (400mH0, Heather Oakes (Sprints),
Seb Coe (Olympic 1500m champion), Dalton Grant (High Jump), Anthony
Jarrett (110m Hurds) and John Herbert (Triple Jump) amongst many others.
Paul Valle was an early Enfield Intern'l in 1946 (200m). More recently
there has been Geoff Capes (Shot), Ron Jones (100m), Roy Mitchell &
Alan Lerwill (Long Jump), Sue Morley (400mH), Lynda Whiteley (Discus)
Roald Bradstock (Javelin), Simon Williams (Discus & Shot)& Hugh
Teape (110m Hurdles). On the track the Men compete in the British Lge
Div. 1, ,the Junior u20 Men In the winter the club competes in both the Chingford League & Metropolitan cross-country League, and throughout the year a strong walking section hosts the monthly Enfield Walking League. Headquarters: Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Donkey Lane Enfield (off A10).Also the New River Stadium, White Hart Lane, Wood Green. Both are 8-lane synthetic tracks. Club nights are Tuesdays & Thursdays at both sites after 6pm with coaching for all disciplines available. There is a strong link with schools in Enfield , Lea Valley & Haringey. |
